Well, it has finally arrived and am now celebrating my forth year of sobriety with positive attitude, I feel absolutely awesome!
It has been a battle I can tell you but, one that I can say I have come out of unscathed.
Four Years Of Alcohol Sobriety
To come from someone who had always failed at most things I have tried to accomplish to what I am now I can only boil down to attitude.
A good attitude though, not a bad one.
One can’t get very far with a bad attitude. This I can say one hundred percent.
I never ever thought that I would make it thus far when I first started down this journey. Hell, I didn’t think I was even going to get past the first few days.
I have shown a side of me that none has witnessed before; not even myself.
I am surprised at what I have accomplished and as previously mentioned it all came down to a positive attitude.
Positive Attitude Is The Key To A Successful Sobriety
Not only a good attitude but a new mind set is what one must bring themselves to, to accomplish things in life that you might have never thought possible out of yourself.
I am living proof of that folks!
Ask anyone I know, I have failed at most of the things that I tried to put my mind to other than maybe a Geometry or Biology mid and final exam back in high school.
Everything else has in one way or another has pretty much failed.
Well, not all I should say. I have somehow managed to stay in the trade I have been in since I left high school. That would be the Electrical trade.
I did not always have a positive attitude with my current job position but ever since I got sober, that too has changed drastically.
So, you see that a positive attitude is the key to not only a successful sobriety but also anything that you try to accomplish in this lifetime.
Never ever let anyone tell you that you are not capable of accomplishing things you have set out to do that you feel so strongly about!
Continuing Down The Path Of Alcohol Sobriety
Nothing in life is guaranteed, right? So, why should I be so damn sure of myself that I can make it another four years?
Well, if you have read up until this point, you will have the answer to that question.
Nobody can see the future but we can make our own future by looking straight ahead and not look back from where we came.
We already know where we came from and for me, this is a one way street with no chances for a u-turn. But as said before, nothing is certain.
New Problems To Face With A Positive Attitude
Let me give you a prime example; Recently I have been hit with a problem in my life that one would say was a shocker of a surprise.
I have been hit with a disease, at least I think it is a disease.
It is named: Trigeminal Neuralgia. Let me tell you it is something that has been named the “suicide disease”.
Now, wouldn’t you think I would need one hell of a positive attitude to face this head on?
Here is the definition for Trigeminal Neuralgia:
Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from your face to your brain. If you have trigeminal neuralgia, even mild stimulation of your face — such as from brushing your teeth or putting on makeup — may trigger a jolt of excruciating pain.
You may initially experience short, mild attacks. But trigeminal neuralgia can progress and cause longer, more-frequent bouts of searing pain. Trigeminal neuralgia affects women more often than men, and it’s more likely to occur in people who are older than 50.
Because of the variety of treatment options available, having trigeminal neuralgia doesn’t necessarily mean you’re doomed to a life of pain. Doctors usually can effectively manage trigeminal neuralgia with medications, injections or surgery.
Well no, doesn’t that sound like fun? LOL Well, it’s not. As a matter of fact, to get through this takes more than a positive attitude, it takes much more.
When one is faced with something in their life that changes everything, a completely different mindset is needed.
So, here I go again…
You see, life has a really weird way of throwing you a curve ball.
First it was trying to get past my addiction to alcohol to something completely different but this is where you must really dig in and pull that positive attitude out and get it done again.
Life Has Its Ups And Downs
With this new problem in my life right on top of my forth year of sobriety, I am kind of glad it did. Not for the new pain but to remind me on how to get my mindset back in check.
You see, it is all about how you take life. You can either let it kick yer ass or you can stand up in its face and say, “I’m not going down from this”.
This is a great example of that positive attitude! You can either lay down and let that train roll over you or show it that you are much more powerful then that.
To be honest…. friends, family and any type of support can also have that same attitude you see.
Here is a great example of that; Just the other day when the pain was jabbing at my face and bringing me down to my knees I said out loud to my good friend that if this is something I have to live with for the rest of my life then hell with me trying to keep sober!
Right then and there he said, “Why would you throw everything away that you have accomplished this far just because of this?”
He too is a recovering alcoholic of way more than twenty years. He know of more struggles than myself because not only of his own battles with the alcohol but also having a disabled child who the doctors told him that he would not live very long.
His positive attitude and determination as with his family gave him and his wife and child more power than anything to get past what people and those doctors told them so, he knows how to get past those struggles.
I listen to him all the time, He is now becoming one of my truly best friends in this world and is an honor to know him and be able to get that positive attitude and positive reinforcement!
I can lean on him if I need.
When he talked with me. when I said that I was just gunna throw away all my four years of staying sober just because of a new hurdle he looked at me and said, why? Why would you do that?
I looked at him and he had that look of concern and compassion that told me that I had said something so idiotic and selfless, I had to stop and think about it. I had to pull myself together and regain that positive attitude that has carried me as far as it has.
So yeah, life has its up and downs but you need to know how to handle them or it is always good to have a support to pull you back up into the reality you are trying to escape from.
I am happy to be sober for all these years. Without that positive attitude, becoming and staying that way can be challenging for many.
